Dear Thomians

THOMIAN CAROL SERVICE – A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS
A small team with members from the OBA committee and a few other Senior Thomians have been responsible for making all arrangements for the Thomian Carol Service during the past years. This year will be the eighth year where we will celebrate the festival of Nine Lessons and Carols based on the traditional Carol Service held on the first Saturday in December at the College Chapel every year since 1946.
The members of the organising committee after careful thought and deliberation decided to approach the OBA membership, hence this communiqué.
Trip Advisor rates a visit to the Chapel of the Transfiguration, at STC Mt Lavinia, at 33 out of 129 things to do in Colombo. When you think about it, this is high praise indeed!
Further, a quick scan of Google reveals that the Chapel Choir is internationally renowned for its excellence in Choral Music modelled after that of the iconic Kings College Choir at Cambridge University in the UK.
We are very fortunate to have amongst us in Sydney, a few old Thomians with direct links to the STC Choir, foremost among them being our current Choir Master Vasantha Weerakoon and David Sansoni, who has been with the Thomian Choir since its inception.
The OBA appointed Organising Committee with precious funding from the Sydney STC OBA, has been maintaining this great tradition assisted by a high calibre Choir of volunteers. The annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, now in its eighth year, has firmly established itself on the calendar of ‘must attend’ community events at the beginning of the Christmas season in Sydney.
Apart from the brilliant Choral Music, the delightful ‘social’ which follows enables us to catch up with our local friends and those visiting Sydney during the holiday season too.
Delivering the address this year, will be distinguished old Thomian Kanishka Raffel, who was recently appointed to the prestigious position of Dean at St Andrew’s Anglican Cathedral at Town Hall.
Also this year, the choir will be accompanied by Ms Godelieve Ghavalas who is the acclaimed organist at St Patricks ‘on the Hill’ church in Wynyard.
The budget for the festival is about $5,000 each year. Accordingly, we are launching a new initiative inviting you to kindly consider being part of this popular community event by helping to fund it.
All donations will be acknowledged and recognised in an appropriate manner (unless anonymity is requested).
Your donation whether large or small would be most appreciated! However, if you would like to make a lasting contribution to this major community event why not become a ‘Sponsor’?
Ideally, we would like to establish a continuing cohort of, say 25, committed annual donors who could pledge at least $100 per annum. They will become ‘Sponsors’ of this event. The latter should raise circa $2,500 in core funding for the festival each year.
Any excess funds would be hypothecated by the STC OBA and held over for the festival following year.

If you are making an annual pledge, please indicate this via email. Feel free to contact any member of the Organising Committee (below) if you have any queries.
