A convention hall, the need of the hour

Shirajiv Sirimane in the Maldives

“Sri Lanka needs a purposely build convention centre to reap additional economic benefits,” said Lanka Exhibition and Conventions Services (LECS), Arjuna Dharmadasa. Speaking to the ‘Daily News Business’ at the Hotel Asia show, he said that both economies in Singapore and Hong Kong had received a tremendous boost after the opening of convention centers in their own countries.

He recalled that a Singapore Shipping Minister had been given a task by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, to formulate plans to develop the Shipping sector in the country in the 1960s.

“This minister went ahead and built a convention centre and soon ships were to bring in merchandise for exhibitions and also there was other related developments in trade and tourism, which helped towards building the Singapore economy.”

Similarly, Hong Kong offered prime land to investors to build a convention centre which had helped their economy in a great way.

“Even today, when there was a convention in Singapore, it had been very difficult to find a room or even a taxi. This proves the value of a convention centre to a county,” he said. Several billions of rupees don’t have to be invested to build a convention centre.

“For a convention centre to be built, a basic concrete floor, four walls and a roof which even does not need a sophisticated ceiling, was sufficient. It should be air conditioned and a large car park in place,” he said.

He said that the biggest convention facility in Sri Lanka was the BMICH and the Convention hall, but they were unable to host large events depriving the country of valuable ‘events.’

“What should be done is to build convention halls in the proposed Port City or even in Hambantota, where there was an international harbour and an airport.”

He said that a convention centre would stimulate trade, tourism, port, aviation and many other businesses that would take place in Sri Lanka in the world convention map bringing in addition, foreign exchange to the country.

He said that today the Maldives Dharbaaruge convention centre where the hotel show was being hosted, was not spacious enough and the LECS had to turn away 30 would be exhibitors. The “Maldivian government was now looking for a suitable building to build a spacious convention center,” he said.

The Hotel Asia 2012 will cater to a wide array of segments related to the hospitality industry. Products and services that are both directly and indirectly related to the hospitality industry will be showcased at the exhibition.

It is set to bring in diverse segments, related to the industry into one common platform enabling all those related to the industry to witness the biggest and most comprehensive hotel fiesta to be held in scenic tourist destination of Maldives with the able support of Corporate Sponsors Bestbuy Maldives, Fantasy Pvt Ltd and Lily F&B Suppliers.

Associated Newspapers is the Print Media sponsor for the event.
