Default 1st Teachers Felicitation Dinner 2007

Subject: RE: Mr K J Leo De Silva & Mr.Quentin Israel

Dear Friends,

We are loosing our old Masters who were responsible to make us what we are, one by one.

Sriyan has been always at me, wanting to felicitate all these Masters who are still alive. What he say is a small dinner and a gift as a token of appreciation.

I think it is time to put Sriyan’s idea into action to pay our respects to them without waiting to do so when they have closed their eyes for good.

I suggest that those who want to have this event to send a mail to Sriyan so that we could rope everyone in and make this happen.

Regards,

GY

Dear G Y

I agree with you that we can felicitate old masters.

Sriyan is the best as he gave enough problems to all the masters and specially to the younger masters when Sriyan was a student.(Fortunately he did not have any affection for the female teachers !!).

He should coordinate this
He can count on me to participate.

Regards,

GDVP

Dear Lalith

Sorry I could not accompany you to the funeral parlour as I had to take my daughter for Ms Ruwani Semons funeral. When I went to pay my last respects to Mr Quntin Israel I met his new phew with whom he was living at Ja-Ela. Apart for a very few Trinitians there were no Thomians present at that time.

Attached herewith are some news paper articles about him. Also attached is a letter to Kesaralal by me regarding Mr Leo De Silvas funeral and his article about our beloved teacher.

With kind regards

Sriyan

Dear Dhammi,
Funny I did not get your mail.
Sriyan, thanks for forwarding the same.

I must remind you gentleman as to why in the College song they have the line
'Thomians young and old'. That is our founders had the foresight that there
will be persons like Sriyan, who will start being naughty when they are in
their old age.

Incidently, my friends have done a lot of research as to what has happened
to me "Banian". Sriyan will spill the beans at the proper forum. I was told
that Dr Watson (Malbrough) was shocked at the findings of Mr Holmes
(Sriyan).

Sriyan, please ensure that the Masters and wives are not around.
Regards,

Gy

Dear Sriyan,I would be DELIGHTED to attend the felicitation on the 4th-I really appreciate you having this during my brief stay.I will attend even though my program will be very tight,as you can understand.
How can I help and make a contribution? Is it men only or can I bring my daughter Kamalini along too?( I am travelling with her only)I may have to ask Sarath Abeykoon or Dhamma for a lift if they are passing Nedimala.
I really look forward to meeting up ,at long last, with my teachers and friends ,some of who I may not have seen since leaving College-I may have to come with a name tag !! Kind regards,Leca

Dear Leca,

I can pick you up. No worries.
Is your Nedimala phone no. 2713462 ?

Dear Sriyan,

Thanks to a phone call from GY I heard about the felicitation. I had not gone through the home mails for weeks.

I normally operate the office email daily. But my home one (yahoo) is looked at perhaps once in 14 days !!
By the way please change my email in office to dhamitha@lankemplantations.lk. I note that you still have me programmed as "gdvp".

I wrote yesterday from office to you that I can pick up Manda and maybe Appathuraj. I can still do that and then follow up to Nedimala and get Deepal Leca. If so I can contact Leca direct - no problem there, but how about Manda and Appathuraj ? I will check from office email whether phone nos. available and if so do you want me to attempt to contact them.

Rgds to all

Dhamma.

Default Preparations for the 1st Teachers Felicitation in 2006.

Sir Yasawaman!

I have embarked with some vigour … such as I am able to muster at my time of life(!?!) … on the fashioning of some “felicitatory” lines … embodying memories … few ‘personal’ … few ‘borrowed’ … you know what I mean … of the ‘stars’ of the night, the Gurus you good folk will felicitate.

My contribution may be described as a collection of “Sonnet-ettes”, mine being of 12 lines in value … as opposed to the 14 of Sonnets.

I have ‘felicitated’ to-date:

Mrs Ila Mendis

Mrs Doreen Warsakoon

Nalini the Art teacher – please confirm her surname, thank you

Mr JMVL Peiris

Mr Ashuboda

Mrs Lorna Mendis

Mr Brodie

Mr Athputhraj

Brothers, please provide (again! I know!!) the full list so I may complete this exciting project and submit my work for review – thank you.

Above all (!!!), please supply information that may be poetised/versified in the sonnet-ettes. For example – your anecdote, GY, of the origin of your pet name is exactly what I seek. Another example (just in case!!): my personal memory of JMVLP saying to Johann Brohier (L4 – 1964), “Now, bring your finger here.” (This was when Brohier’s finger was reported to have been injured in a fracas down the back of the class. Or another – Athputhraj’s imperative: “No pol-addi”. Get the drift…..? I would not indulge in ‘insult’ (however mild…) like raking up a painful memory of Lal De Mel’s harassing … as reported to me, in confidence. Thank you all.

Waiting in eager anticipation.

David

My very humble and sincere apologies about the ‘meeting’ at your place on Saturday. I was really ‘cheesed off’ at how things went hopelessly out of control in my place here.

I had been dealing with a carpenter who was doing some fairly major renovation works in the kitchen and some other parts of the house. It was so delayed, that I began to fret by about 4.00pm that I was now going to have some difficulty in getting to Boralesgamuwa on time. Then, you called, which was a blessing- at least I could alert you to the fact of my delay.

After that too, things were hopelessly out of ‘synch’. It got really late, and then it turned out that since there were items such as tools and such that needed to be transported, I then had to take the man back to his place, near Panadura and leave him and the stuff there. Believe it or not it was about 10 minutes to 9 by the time I had left him at his place!!!

There was no way I could come over then, and also my mobile phone battery had given up on me during that time.

So, PLEASE do accept my humbles apologies. ALL OF YOU.

I wonder whether it will be possible for you to list the ‘agenda’ for tomorrow, so that I have an idea of what is generally planned? That can be sent to me via e-mail if possible. I shall make myself available before time on the 4th to meet at Sasakawa [if that is OK] and then to work out the details.

Sincerely,

Arun.

Dear Kesaralal,
From the attached comments you will note what milage your article has got. Its a great thing that people such as Y.S. & Kari have commented on it.People such as Ramal & Milroy have done a great job by circulating it widely. As discussed with you please continue to write about our old teachers and the success achieved in this one will no doubt encourage you. I am yet to circularize the 'Sir with love write up". You should give preference to the write ups about the living teachers. When they read them they will spend the rest of their lives happier.
By your actions you have amply testified how to show gratitude to your old teachers. A quality which is rear these days.
With kind regards
Sriyan

Ramal-having Kari as a secret admirer is a dangerous situation, taking in to account his reputation! So better be careful.
My association with Ramal was much later as MBA students of the Sri Jayawardene University's PIM. Didn't we have a ball there. It was like going back to school once again. One day we must meet over a "few' and run through those episodes. Ramal owes to honour more than one appointment he made with me to meet at the SSC and called it off at the last moment. Kari, hope you will join.
Kari -did you know that his brother Peter who worked for Singapore Airlines when I was at Aitken Spence, married our class mate N M Gooneratne's daughter. Now Peter addresses me as "Machang" and hid wife calls me " uncle"; a classic situation!
Sriyan- wemust get this Prefects Group going. There is no point sending out e-mails. Let's plan a gathering one of these days. Kari will tell you that those in our class is having an overdose of gatherings these days. May be once Kari returns from his much looked forward to Bangkok trip we should try and fix a date to meet.
In the meantime please keep in touch.
With best regards,

Dear Sriyan,

I have read Kesaralal's article with much admiration & the tributes which have been pouring in from all quarters, notably the one from Ramal. I have always been a silent admirer of Ramal. If you might not know, Ramal had his grounding at Mackwoods, though not in my Division. He is a guy with exceptional management skills & the way his career has blossomed over the years, is testimony to those talents.

I have to also thank you for circulating the article on Sarath interspersed with your usual brand of good natured humour. I may have been one of the earliest to phone Sarath & congratulate him & I am happy to have done so. If you wish to notify the others, his tel nbrs are 2509230 & 5374374.

Prefects Guild 1969-1973 - Even today I called Nelun. She conveyed her apologies again for her tardiness. She now has the Register which is one major hurdle overcome. She had taken it home but forgotten to bring it to Office to extract & pass on the data to me via e-mail. She promised to let me have it, hopefully this Friday. I will make it a point to call her on Monday.

Best Regards.

Kari
