Subject: BUCK HOUSE MASTER-MR.SATCHITHANANTHAN'S 90th BIRTHDAY-15.10 2014

Dear Sriyan,

Have returned after a visit to Canada and the US.While the whole trip was fabulous a highlight of it all was to meet my former House Master the genial and gentle(at a time when harsh words and corporal punishment was the norm sometimes even for petty classroom’ felonies’ )Mr.Satchithanandan who is doing VERY well living with his son’s family in Scarborough,a suburb of Toronto.I was able to track him down through the help of Russell Rajaratnam and was taken to see him courtesy of another Thomian(my med school batchmate) Rajan Rajasingham now a senior surgeon in Toronto.

Despite being treated for a leg infection he looked in GREAT form(his D I Law said that normally he ‘wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a sarong’!) –very happy to see me and reminisced fondly about the old Buck House brigade of JBPieris,Thiedeman ,Jansz and Lecamwasam who gamely took part in every sport known to Man-even inter house drama, water polo, basketball and cross country-and invariably lost!!Despite about to become a nonagenarian he was remarkably physically robust(going for daily long walks) and mentally crisp(no doubt helped by the sort of boy he kept company in Buck House(Mens sana in corpore sano)!!)He has written an autobiography of sorts –it looked an impressive book .Another student,Hallock, was visiting from Australia and we had a most convivial evening posing for many pix with this remarkable man,his son and grandson.Rajan and I left inspired(we have since postponed any ideas of retiring)feeling refreshed, quite a few years younger…..

Please share this with those who will remember Satchchi-especially JB(for whom I have no email) and also staff of the same excellent vintage.

For those who wish to congratulate him on his 90th his address is

C.Sachithananthan,250,Brenyon Way,#602 Scarborough,ON NIB 393,Canada

Kind regards,

Leca
