NEWS RELEASE
Festival of Kadadora Raja Maha PATTINI Devale –
Ruwanwella, Kegalle District, Subaragamuwa Province
Blessings of Goddess Pattini are sought in fertility of humans and paddy
produce, safe birthing & health of children, against feared incurable disease for
which she acquired power through a boon from God Devol in exchange of her
permission for him to land at Seenigama.
The Kadadora Devale built by Rajasinghe 1st of the Kingdom of Sitawaka is celebrating
the 438th year annual Perahera revived by the incumbent Basnayaka Nilame Srilal
Perera from 2017 October 02nd to 06th
. The ceremonies following on a tradition of
over 400 years heritage are as follows:
Monday October 02
nd about 0400pm – the ancient tradition of venerating the coconut
flower bud and bunch of mature coconuts by upgrading these to a level of veneration on
taking it to the Devale ceremoniously in procession upon the head under canopy
accompanied with crack of whips, flag carriers and hewasii drummers.
Tuesday October 03
rd about 0700pm ceremoniously ambulating around the Devale with the
Sacred Aabharana items.
Wednesday October 04
th about 0800pm ambulating on the outer Perahera path at the
Devale of about which has been documented by the very first archaeological commissioner
of Ceylon H.C.P. Bell in his Kegalle report.
POYA Thursday October 05
th about 0900pm the Perahera of the Devale leave the Naa forest
illuminated by copra flame torch bearers continuing with tradition to parade on the public
streets from the Devale to Aguruwella town and return: Whip crackers, Fire acrobats some
of them on stilts, Flag bearers, Elephants, Drummers, Dancers, including the Randoliya
containing the sacred Anklet of Goddess Pattini aspiring to be a future Buddha, the only
known female qualifying to that level within the followers of Theravada discipline.
October 06th about 0400am – Water cutting Perahera starts early morning at dawn in the
age-old traditions of parting waters as initiated originally in the 1st century AD by King
Gajabahu is followed on return at the Devale premises by the enactment of the struggle of
Goddess Pattini and God Devol when a curtain of fire materialised to prevent his entry was
overcome with the exchange of a boon against feared incurable diseases of viral origins such
as Aids, Chickenpox, Dengue, Dysentery, Measles, Mumps, Smallpox, etc.
