Hello skipper.
Agreed it will be a great show like how Late Archie and I directed the famous COX & BOX, as a fund raiser for copleston seniors with support from Late Harsha abeywardena @ SRIKOTHA in 1969. all tickets were sold show lasted only 1/2 hour. as Archie engineered a fight and cops came and curtained the show. Archi was laughing all the way to the Dorm it was a good profit.

now to your queries but the problem is all teams from 1969- 1984 want to be a part in the show and i opine this has to be continued at the show we will hand over the battern to the 1971 team and they can coin Remembering QI By 71'ERS etc as we ceased to play WEF 1971. and then it will go on from there of course the idea has to be approved by our committee and renga + OTRFU. our team was thinking in supporting u 10 team in the name of Of great MR Quentin Israel Fund for U10. and roll this fund to support the Foundation age groups as we personally believe that's where champs are made. so lets see you must confirm the date as we want fix the hotel. please circulate by adding addresses. of all who love college rugby.
Regards

I like your thought of handing over the baton to the next group
which I suppose is 1971. Yes let them carry on and reach 1984
all funds will be for Of great MR Quentin Israel Fund for U10.

Just a suggestion only+

It will be great if we can hold the event at the college hall.
I remember the STC Choir had a grand do there.
We will be cutting costs.
You can get an outside caterer
You can also hire 50 circular tables with ten chairs to a table.
There was a event coordinator, who handled this, a Thomian
I am sure you can find the guy.
We can have a service at the College chapel for Q as well as for
those who have left us for good.

Its only a suggestion - Thanks DR

Dear DR
Good idea, only problem is that no booze can be consumed in the college premises.
I think with dinner and a band , all that could be managed for around Rs2000/ per head.
The felicitation for the rugby team was around that much.

We have to forget College as a venue.Colombo Swimming Club (just before Galle Face) should be considered. Many among us could be members though I am not.Fantastic atmosphere & the Beach side Lawn (covered area too) equipped with Bandstand & Bar could be reserved for special events.

Why not the 69ers give a Glittering Trophy in the name of QI for the most outstanding Rugby Player – could be U17 or First XV. Just a thought. On the other hand, why not give for the Most Outstanding Rugby Player at the Trinity/STC rugby game. Trinitians also may join as QI was their guy too. We could make it a joint trophy. Just a thought for further discussion.

Hi Sriyan

Many thanks for keeping me posted. Even though I am not in the 69 league (now 69 is a coincidence I suppose ha ha!!), and I may not be around but I am happy to chip in.

I think Dhare or Kari had queried about using Colombo Swimming Club as a venue. I am a member there and I would be happy to arrange something if you guys wish. Yes it is a nice venue. Do let me know.

By the way, we are planning to have our Class of 74 get together weekend of 8th March 2014 (50 years since we started at STC!!), and continue through to the Royal Thomian. Gosh, half a bloody century plus has gone by!!

I am copying Aiya as well, in case he is not in the know.

Note that I am still away and in Zambia.

Cheers & good luck.

Default Thomians honour Quentin Israel

From: "Richard Roberts" <rr2000@bigpond.net.au>
Subject: Thomians honour Quentin Israel

Hi Guys

FYI. A lovely article on QI in case you haven't seen it.

Richard

In the Island newspaper today
Thomians honour Quentin Israel
September 26, 2013, 10:13 pm

by Sharm de Alwis

Thomians know the value of gratitude and of loyalty. The Toronto
Chapter has initiated the next Rugby 7s to be played for the Quentin
Israel Memorial Trophy.
Equipped with a Level Two certificate from the Coaching Council of
Brisbane, Australia, Quentin had his first period of coaching at St
Thomas' College, Mt Lavinia where he took over from Percy Perera in 1969.
In a remarkable run of success spanning 25 years he once won 43 games
on the trot. The grateful Old Boys of the school had sent him on two
World Cup tours and one long jaunt to Australia.
Of the legion of splendid Thomian ruggerites he coached, some have
been P.L.Munasinghe, Michael Jayasekera of whom Gama Fernando has said
"he was the best I have coached but then he was gift wrapped and
delivered to me by Quentin Israel", Chrysantha Perera who was in 1963
the first U17 captain that Quentin coached, Rajpal Samarasinghe,
Rengannathan, Shane Pinder, Shanaka de Livera and brothers Savantha and Chariya de Saram.
The eloquent eulogy that Chrysantha Perera delivered as Quentin's
mortal remains lay in state at the Trinity chapel encapsulated the
mentor's achievements and still reverberates in every recess of our souls.
He also had a spell of coaching with Havelocks when in 1986 the Club
won the President's trophy after sixteen years They won all three
titles and in the Finals of the inter-club seven-a side tournament
Havelocks 'A' met Havelocks 'B'. Quentin had earlier been the club
Secretary for eight years and its President for two years.

When I first made overtures to him to coach Trinity, he gave me cogent
reasons why he couldn't accept the offer: "Not only am I an Old
Trinitian but my sisters are also Old Trinitians; I asked Trinity
first but they wouldn't have me. In any case I have done something for
St Thomas' and the boys expect me to be with them.
I had met with the Trinity Principal and had negotiated terms for
Quentin to coach Trinity but, alas, after several months, the
Principal recanted on the arithmetic and I realized that "a verbal
contract is not worth what it is written on." My credo has forbidden me to build on a broken promise.
The next year the Old Trinitians' Rugby Scrummage, under the
stewardship of Kenneth Boteju, Raja 'Dabar' Adhihetty and Udeni
Molligoda, undertook the payment for Quentin to coach Trinity.
He coached Trinity for only six years from 1995 to 2000 and in that
period drilled the boys to win five out of six Bradbys. In the first
three years the Trinity line was never crossed by the Royalists.
The Bradby he lost was when the captain, Prasanna Jayawardena and his
deputy Suren Hulangamuwa were injured within ten minutes of the 2nd
Leg. Trinity had in the 1st Leg turned tables on Royal in Colombo
despite Maiya Gunasekera's prediction of "60 in Colombo, 40 in Kandy."
After the 1st Leg, the Royal coach, C.P.P.Abeygunawardena said in the
car park for my benefit, "Must have them tested for steroids" which I considered a huge compliment.
Some misguided elements in the OBA were not happy when the odd game
was lost. They wanted every match to be won and every boy to be a
potential National player. This had been the bane even at STC.
Quentin is the first rugby coach to have watched games of other
schools to study strengths and weaknesses to evolve ploys and
stratagems. When he was coaching St Thomas' he once came to Bogambara
to watch Trinity play Wesley who were then wooden-spoonists. That very
day his beloved Havelocks were playing a key match in Colombo.
He not only watched video footage with his players but he would even
get into the mind of the rival coach. He would also study the wind factor.
Quentin produced twelve rugby Lions within his six year stint at
Trinity and considered Prasanna Jayawardena to be the finest full back he has coached.
He also coached the redoubtable Haris Omar, Pradeep Basnayake,
S.Amarasinghe, M.Panduwawala, Rajiva Madugalle, M.H.Madagamage, M.B.
Meegahakumbura, KJNP Jayawardena, Nuwan Fernando, Suren Hulangamuwa
who was the first hooker after Bobby Sanmugam who captained in 1951 to
be awarded the Lion, Kavinda Jayasena. What a wonderful pride of Lions.
He was considered the guru by all and sundry. When during his period
with St Thomas' he was convalescing at the Nawaloka Hospital after an
illness, the Twin Towers of Royal visited him ,yanked his oxygen mask
and asked for tips on how to beat Trinity.
When the Thomians wished to play the U17 series with Trinity for the
Quentin Israel Trophy, the Trinity Principal of the time shot down the
suggestion saying it should be in honour of a past Principal. He
conveniently ignored that the Philip Buultjens trophy is played for in the inter-school Sevens.
A prophet is without honour in his own country.

Hi Guys

What a great honour for the hard yards he put in over the years. He was also a good maths master. Warden AJCS as punishment made him teach maths in Tamil to us. I remember him coming and say "I say man you dont mind if I explained everything in English and wrote the answers in tamil" and guess the answer I gave " sure Sir so no problems" in return I got a good marks for maths everytime. He even said Aria you look like a big why dont you come for rugby practice. I told him sir I am scared that Haniffa will bunch my balls if i am in a scrum ! Hey only joking hannifa!

I like him because he was down to earth never held a grudge at all. STC needs Masters of honour like him.

I agree with DR. There is something missing especially the roots of his success. The abilities he bought to College definitely flowered beginning in 69.

I was a part of the Practice squad that we called the SPOILERS. We gave the first team anxious moments and a run for their money. At times, Quinta would pick up our strategy and warn the first team!! I am sure DR and Shehan the captains would agree that the Practice Squad brought a lot to the table and the first team was all the better for it.

We had to put up with a lot. David’s once a season washed shorts and Ryle’s same. Poor Jerome had to bind with them. Haniffa Bada was the instigator. Good old days. Do not forget DD’s jocks that could have been a good advert for Balsam Vinegar today!!

Trevor seems to have had a temporary meltdown and I am glad it has been ironed out. As Massa says, Trevor was very close to an ON REPORT and probably six of the best. Trevor as I know, was and is a Competitor. David you have to continue with your recollections regardless of whom you may select to be at the end of it. But, you may have a temporary lapse in memory of the shorts!!

Hey guys what do you think of Quinta’s selection of Sangara as the prop forward just before the Royal Tho or was it Trinity. If I remember correct, Sangara did not come for practices at all. I hope both of them did not go after the same prey and this was a pay back!! Sangaray had brute force and he was fit after chasing boys round the pool!! Sangara no hard feelings!!. In the first minute of the first match, Sangara had to field an up and under. Anyone remember whether he caught it? Then I remember YS’s up and under which went back!!

Good old days.

Self and Jerome have a beef with DR. When he was the Head Cop, he caught us smoking in the Bucket Shop. We used to select horses when we had no clue as to whether they were even eating grass!! Next day, he wanted us to bring a pack of cigarettes each. We had to eat including the cellophane. After we ate 1 or 2, he kicked us out of the cop shed. We had no idea as to what happenned to the rest of the cigarettes!!

Good old days which we will never see and probably the present crop and will never experience.

2) Doyle. The true story about the jocks. I always washed my jocks the (copleston A )Dorm toilets is my only witness. But my buddy and bestman archi always wore them for athletics practice with pepo which was around 2:30, and rugby started by 4:pm. So what option did i have. After all unlike doyla we boarders had small mercies.

DR, DD & Doyle & rest of the "Sherman Tanks" of 69
Great stuff guys-
The memories of Quentin's coaching and the Team spirit instilled by DR was amazing - I think back what a strategist Quentin was making me play at prop against the Bens ( remembering I had only the lean & hungry look) which turned out to be a success as my opposite number was my good friend Dinal Jayamanna who I was able squeeze his jelly fat and let YS have a field day- In Quentin's eye I must have passed his test as I then went on to play Prop against Issipatana - tried the same tactics and was having great success until the Mike Davis trained G Fernando came down with a fist right into my jaw- No ice or MRI scans etc - just a swollen face!!- I was back to second row paring with Nalin J - We actually would have won that match except Jimmy D'Sousa disallowed Shian's try -in David's memoirs he did the same in 1970 - Old Jimmy must have had something against us as he was a local and lived down Watarapola road .....

Talk about multi-skilling - Quentin invented it in 1969- He moulded a team of 2nd XV/U17 with the help of DR and few of the senior players to play a standard that was taken away mid 1968. My sweetest moment was the last match of the season against St Peters - when the Peterite Captain on the steps of the college pool- yelled out to us to bring our cricket scorebook - we beat them 8-0.
The thirst to win was the 1969 slogan - from the Peterite win -The 1970 Team proved that Quentin's strategies were working.

Personally for a bloke who got kicked out of the U17 team by Jim Brown for putting a boot in GM Fernando's instead of tackling him - ended up playing with the Merdeka Club in Police Park with a few Royalists ala Wijelal Pinto Jayawardene etc - asked by Percy Perera after college lost to Vidyarta at Police Park to attend practice and into the last five games of the 1968 season - right into new era in 1969 with Quentin, DR and some great Team mates who I will cherish in my memory. Rugby was my freedom from studies!!!!

DD I like your idea of a dinner for the Quentin's 69ers - God willing it will be great to be in attendance.

In true Thomian spirit keep the memories flowing- if anyone gets offended ,bad luck, as Skipper DR will issue a conduct report and six laps round the big club.
Best Regards
Massa

Doyle - ask Kari - what happened to your 4 aces.

Guys - just write whatever you like and want, after all its over 40 years, and memories do tend to fail,
don't get offended, yes there were tough times and tough decisions were made, after all only a 15 to a side, and I am sure we always fielded the best possible.

The idea of the 69's is great - I am supposed to be in SRL in August next year - DD you have all the
time - lets do it. OMG what a bash this will be!!

Thanks Hetti.
Opine we must get this done and dusted. if we go to add more names it will upset the design.Pancho can handle as he is with me. i think JK's number there is a point. but again he will be given at least 30 tickets to get rid of, am going to sell 50. the 350 will go like hot cakes after all the ladies and Thomian well wishes are gracing the occasion. what about OTRFU they must sell @ least 30 tickets. so my opinion is just get it printed. already Sydney OBA have agreed on 10 tickets. and by 8th when i Address Melbourne OBA sure to flog 10 -15 ticks. so dont change the designs to include my number.or even JKS.
2) yes we will get sashi to brief Punchihewa and the Bar at OTSC get them to sell 30 Ticks. and Secretariat you can handle. keep 30 tickets.
3) once we get the posters lets decide the rest.like CR&FC, Havies. supermarkets to keep posters. JK will help with laugh gas.
4) Hi mate get the DSA group and STC Prefects to carry the E flier and tickets please get hush to mail ticks and e flier final to sriyan J keeping him in the loop.

5) something very important need to be done why not you, hush- hush, pancho & sasi sit together @ sashis office and plan ticket selling chaps. and emailing list, donation list& add list. we can get OTRFU list and mail e fliers out courtesy Assanka.

6) Hetti invite warden.and also advise we are using the college crest before we fire the Salvos. Briefed Him unofficially when i met him Early Jan that too on the beach. best we maintain Protocol.

7) Get HAF to sell tickets he was very keen like Arjun D. as mentioned spend time only with useful Blokes.
Thanks Mates.

Dear Sherman Tank - DD ,
I met genial Asanka today on appointment .
She will correct the invitation letter , by removing the word felicitation .
She will also kindly report back to me on the sponsor letters to follow soon .
Was Hush going to add the new phone numbers suggested ?
Is the OTSC , OBA Secretariat and nominees what to say and do if an inquiry call is made ?
Kind regards +

Dear ALL
Thank you for all the support, resending the E flier for circulation with the Ticket template one last time. 350 Security Coded Tickets will be sale from 25th April. a table will be 10 Ps wives included. each table will have Liquors and vines. and kindly limit sales to Thomians and college rugby lovers and their Ladies.
Please advise the tickets will be grabbed up fast as overseas branches have already booked 50 tickets and local bookings of over 150 tickets as of now. Its going to be a great night and every cent of the profits are going for Skill/talent building of Under 12 Rugby pools. Coined as "THORA SHERMAN TANKS". and the catch and give phrase used by MR Quentin Israel will be made a reality by this being an annual event in the college rugby calender with 1971 and 1972 rugby teams taking over 2015 event from present 2014 organizers 1969& 1970 Teams.
ESTO PERPETUA.
DD and Team Of wonderful men of Qi '69ers.
For 2014 Event.
